This painting captures a naturally occurring granite stair formation, a magical stairway to an Alaskan glacier. Of necessity, it was created faster than a painting — due to the fast-drying inks and the need to print before the inks dried. The process was constraining, but the creative experience was far freer and maybe a little more magical than the original painting.
My son and his wife lived in Alaska for the first five years of their marriage. They had grand adventures in this wild country. One time, George was flown to a remote island via seaplane and left with only a satellite phone and some rudimentary camping gear. When the wind was still, he heard the haunting sound of whales singing in the distance. He saw dramatic, unforgettable views of Kodiak Island through channels of churning ocean and mud flats. His mesmerizing stories inspired the Alaska Tidal and Landscape Series.
